Donor advised funds can legally ignore their donors’ wishes

According to Blaukbaud consultant Katherine Swank, the California based Friends of Fiji donor advised fund recently handed out $600,000 (of $2.5 million) to recipients that the donor did not request.  When the donor sued, the Friends of Fiji used more of the “donor’s” funds to (successfully) defend themselves.  This case is probably an extreme one, but it highlights the legal nature of donor advised funds:  once you deposit your money it is technically no longer yours.
