Treasurer
Jim Baillie
Research and Data Manager, Naropa University
jbaillie@naropa.edu
Research is in Jim’s blood. Literally. He inherited a love of books from his mother (a librarian); by completing his MLIS at Syracuse University, he extended the family’s tradition of librarianship to three generations (his great-uncle was dean at a top tier library school). Specializing in science librarianship (animal ethology and astronomy are still favorite subjects), Jim eventually landed at the Boston Public Library and reveled in its world class collections. He was also active in the Boston Library Consortium and the Massachusetts Library Association’s Conference Committee. He has presented on science librarianship topics at the Massachusetts Library Association’s annual conference as well as to other smaller venues. He was a Solar System Ambassador with the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and presented lectures to the public on astronomy -- while taking graduate classes in Astronomy (for fun!) at Swinburne University.
After a decade of working in libraries, the last four years in a middle-management position, Jim moved to Colorado and made the leap to prospect research. He joined Naropa University's Advancement team in 2006. At Naropa, Jim is responsible for management of the donor database; he works closely with major gifts officers, trustees, and senior administrators by providing comprehensive analyses of current-donor trends, conducting research on prospective individual/corporate donors and trustees, and developing strategy overviews. Jim's years in library management provide a strong basis for his understanding of the organizational and fundraising challenges of Naropa, but it is his love of delving into complex problems, discovering new databases and information resources, and seeing his research have a material impact on the university that keeps him going.
